It is easy to write captions for all images if all the images were the same orientation.
However, there are some group photos and which you will prefer to lay it vertical and with caption vertical too. How do you write vertical caption for a vertical image?
There is help on the Internet.
Here is one I found useful:

VERTICAL IMAGE
This is a brief guide about how to add a caption for a vertical image in Word document.
1. Choose an image.
Choose a long rectangular image to try - maybe a group photo.
Paste an image on an empty page in Word document. Align it to the top left of the page.
Allow some space above your image, so you can see what is happening.
2. Turn an image.
To turn an image, click Rotate, select Rotate left 90 degrees. Check to see if the image is facing the correct way.
3. Enlarge an image.
Enlarge your image as you wish by pulling on the corner handles. Allow some space for caption.
4. Add a caption.
To add a caption for a vertical image, there are two ways to add a Text Box:
- Click Format, then click Add Text Box.
- Click Insert, then click Add Text Box.
Copy and paste your text for your caption into the Text Box, or write some new text. Save your work.
To have the correct direction for your caption, click Text Direction repeatedly till you see what you want. If the caption is the correct orientation, save your work.
5. Align a vertical caption.
Now, align your caption vertically. Expand your Text Box to fit next to your image, either to the right or left of the image. Left side for heading or sub-heading, and right side for caption. Sub-heading does not have a full-stop. Caption has a full-stop.
6. Size of vertical caption.
Drag the corner handle of your Text Box to the desired size.
Position your Text Box properly next to your image by dragging using the cross-hair mark or click and drag your Text Box where you want it to be.
Once your Text Box (caption) is properly placed, save your work.
7. Colour and border of caption.
You can select colours and borders for your Text Box. Remember, if you use dark colour and want to photocopy later, the caption will have a dark background and the caption will be difficult to read.
Save your work.
