Future handphones & cars have GPS/GSM/GPRS as standard featureDual signal technology

Berg Insight says 34 million security applications will be connected to European cellular networks in 2014
According to a new research report from the analyst firm Berg Insight, shipments of wireless M2M modules for security applications in EU27+2 will grow from 2.3 million in 2009 to nearly 22 million by 2014. At the same time, the number of alarm systems and tracking devices monitored from an alarm receiving centre or similar will grow from about 10 million in 2009 to 34 million by the end of 2014. Vehicle tracking and recovery is a major application area for wireless M2M communication in the security industry. Devices combining GPS and GSM/GPRS technologies enable monitoring services for any mobile object. Passenger cars and commercial vehicles constitute the main target markets by virtue of numbers and individual value, but there are also many niche markets such as construction equipment as well as leisure vehicles and boats.
Today, clients are frequently advised to install security systems that take advantage of wireless communication and satellite positioning when applying for an insurance policy. “If you buy a top-of-the-range luxury car in European countries such as the Benelux or the UK, your motor insurer will most probably require that it is equipped with a GSM/GPS anti-theft system”, says AndrĂ© Malm, senior analyst at Berg Insight. He adds that once the European eCall initiative to equip all cars with GSM/GPS technology to enable automatic 112 emergency calls in case of an accident is in place, this will most likely also drive adoption of stolen vehicle tracking services that can use the same technology.
Insurance companies also encourage the use of dual fixed line and wireless signalling solutions in monitored alarm systems. A single landline connection between the alarm system and the alarm receiving centre is no longer deemed sufficient for high security premises. By adding a secondary wireless link, communication becomes much more reliable and cannot easily be disrupted.
Moreover, there is a significant untapped potential in the residential market segment that can be fulfilled with the latest generation of monitored alarm systems with GSM/GPRS or dual signalling technology.
Berg Insight estimates that there will be nearly 4 million alarm systems connected to wireless networks in Europe by 2014.

Futuristic glass
Cutting-edge future advanced technologies
Interactive smart glass interfaceFilm is either the film reel or projection screen. In the early Malayan TV industry, the projection screen is called layar (which means film). We have terms like layar perak (silver screen) but rarely layar emas (golden screen) or layar hitam (black screen). There maybe other screen or film colours, maybe layar biru (blue film).
Glass is kaca in Malay. So we have terms like kaca piring (a fragrant white flower which resembles the rose), kaca mata for eyeglasses or spectacles, or point of view.
Mirror or cermin is hardly used but highly meaningful in the IT context.
Touchscreen uses a special glass that can sense and is intelligent enough to respond to fingertip touches. Interactive software governs all onscreen touches and recognizes the user.
Some touchscreens are small and others can be as big as a room wall. Size will depend on applications.
A consultation room may have a large touchscreen on a wall or on all walls or several touchscreens of various sizes for different applications.
The smart mobile phone has the smallest touchscreen today.
Future touchscreen tables may have embedded glass touchscreens to serve as multisensors for immediate auto-scanning of paper documents for direct capture into laptops.
Bedside tables in hospitals may have smart glass table tops that can detect medicine bottles placed on them. They serve to help inform patients when it is time to take their medications. Patients can also interact with their medication schedules on their bedside tables by touch-activated touchscreen that shows up only when activated and called for by the patients at the patients' convenience..

Microsoft videos of future technologies
We may not have all the technologies today but it pays to plan for them since funders are usually willing to fund future technology projects rather than obsolete technology. Here are some good videos which will help you to understand what may come in the near future.
While most companies want to hide their future investments and technologies, Microsoft is brave to expose its roll-out of future technologies.
Microsoft Business Division President Stephen Elop was in the Wharton Business Technology Conference, Philadelphia. He brought with him Microsoft's vision for the future, a montage clip called "2019."
Highlighted in the marketing material are interactive newspapers, touch pads and computerized medical records. Please take a look at this video below.

Broadband speed test
How fast is your Internet?
1) Since 17 December 2009, I now have an upgraded fast Internet at work. It reads Local Area Connection Speed: 100Mbps.
2) So fast? Fast enough? Let's check the download/upload speeds with Broadband Speed Test.
3) Results:
4) What do the results mean?
- My download speed is 59.8Mbps instead of 100Mbps
- My upload speed is 1018 kbps or 10Mbps instead of 100Mbps
- I'm getting only 59.8% of what I should get for download
- I'm getting only 10% of what I should get for upload
- My download is slow and missing ~40% of what it can be
- My upload is very slow and missing 90% of what it can be
- My download and upload speeds are not equivalent
- My download speed is greater than my upload speed
- My network provider is supplying a reduced bandwidth
- My bandwidth is 60Mbps and not 100Mbps
- The remaining 40Mbps is reserved
- I need to apply for increased bandwidth
- Skype is not allowed on campus but can be permitted for training
- The bandwidth will be increased upon request for Skype training
If you have to upload a resource that is 300MB to a server, how long will it take you to upload? If you wish to download a resource that is 300MB from a server, how long will it take you to download? What file sizes can you upload in 5 minutes and download in 5 minutes? Assume the speeds in 3) above.

Video streaming
Streaming applies to songs and videos
Streaming media are songs and videos
Video streaming summary:
1) Many web sites allow you to watch video, even live video, without having to wait around for more than a few seconds for it to start.
2) You can see a video streaming when the screen says 'video loading'.
3) Sometimes there is a link that says 'Skip flash' or 'Skip video'.
4) Videos are made and stored in different qualities, sizes and formats to match Internet access mode & speed, and PC OS, platform & capability.
5) In many cases, video is offered in two or more different sizes or at different qualities - so that you can choose the one that plays best with your connection speed.
6) Having a faster connection means you can watch the video at a larger size and better quality.
7) VLC media player is an open source, free software media player and multimedia framework written by the VideoLAN project. VLC is a portable multimedia player, encoder, and streamer supporting many audio and video codecs and file formats as well as DVDs, VCDs, and various streaming protocols. It is able to stream over networks and to transcode multimedia files and save them into various formats. VLC used to stand for VideoLAN Client, but that meaning is now deprecated.
8) YouTube is a video sharing website on which users can upload and share videos. YouTube uses Adobe Flash Video technology to display a wide variety of user-generated video content, including movie clips, TV clips, and music videos, as well as amateur content such as video blogging and short original videos. Most of the content on YouTube has been uploaded by individuals, although media corporations including CBS, the BBC, UMG and other organizations offer some of their material via the site, as part of the YouTube partnership program.
9) Multicasting broadcasts the same copy of the multimedia over the entire network to a group of clients.
10) Reality assignment: If you have 18 tutorial rooms where you wish to show live demo videos to students direct from your lab, how would you go about setting this up and making it possible? Assume the live video demos are scheduled for thrice weekly viewing, for weekly and monthly tutorials. Assume you need to move labs for the different live video demos. Please write your answers, annotate all diagrams and include costing. Submit to Prof Faridah.

Windows XP, Vista and 7
Which is the best, XP, Vista or 7?
I have an XP, a Vista/7 and a 7 on 3 different laptops:
- My old Acer Aspire 1457Z still has an XP
- My Sony Vaio CS had a Vista but I replaced it with 7
- My new Acer Aspire 4740G has a 7
- Fast
- Reliable, dependable
- Good
- Easy to work with
- Simple, intuitive
- Feel good, feel data is safe
- More user-is-in-control feeling and you feel great
- You have better control of your PC
- A great combination!
- Need larger HD
- Slow, so very slow....
- Beautiful graphics and display
- With MS Office: Beautiful PowerPoint presentation formats & animation
- Messy way to access files
- Half the time wondering what the PC is doing
- Never got a nice feeling of the combination
- I could not find anyone who could do Vista partitioning, decided to switch to 7
- Faster than XP and Vista
- Easy to click everywhere
- Beautiful graphics & display
- Less intuitive than XP
- Less user-is-in-control feeling
- The software is too smart and does things for you!
- Sometimes you get worried it is too smart
- Software dominates and you follow even if you don't want to
- It does things that you don't want it to
- It can drive you crazy! Nuts even!
- It can get you frustrated when it is always doing what you don't want it to
- PC has a stiff touchpad that sometimes doesn't seem to respond
- I like the blue LED for the Power button
- I don't like the PC cover at all - it closes with a bang sometimes!
- I hardly take notice of the LEDs at the right side of the PC
- Beautiful sound but my Dell speakers at work sound even better.

Broadband Internet access
Broadband has 2 dimensions - access mode & speed
Access mode: What sort of Internet connection?
Speed: How fast is Internet?
1) Access mode:
2) Broadband speeds:
4) What does broadband Internet connection mean?
Sources:
Broadband Internet access. Wikipedia
Broadband Beginner's Guide, UK.
Access mode: What sort of Internet connection?
Speed: How fast is Internet?
1) Access mode:
2) Broadband speeds:
- Cable ~ 30Mbps
- DSL ~ 10Mbps
- BPL ~ 85Mbps
- Fixed wireless
- Satellite
- Fiber optic ~200Mbps
- T-1 ~100Mbps
- Mobile broadband wireless (WiFi) ~ 100Mbps
4) What does broadband Internet connection mean?
- A 512K broadband Internet connection is around ten times faster than a 56K dial-up Internet connection. It allows you to view web pages with barely any noticeable delay
- An 8Mb broadband connection allows you to watch TV quality video over the web!
- Any of the broadband speeds will be perfectly good for viewing the majority of web pages. Having to wait a second or two for a page to load is perfectly acceptable
- The Internet is not just pages of text and a few images
- Most Internet pages today are multimedia - they contain music, video, animations, games, etc [Isn't multimedia always better?]
- To view music with video, video with audio, animated cartoons with audio, video games with audio, will require higher broadband Internet speeds
- Simulation training programs will also require a certain hardware specification to match the higher speeds
- A 100Mbps broadband Internet connection is expected today
- The workplace should provide at least 100Mbps throughout the day
- At home, the family expects at least 100Mbps throughout the day
- Internet cafes must also provide at least 100Mbps throughout the day
- No, as speed depends on # of users in an area
- Internet Connection Speed can be 100Mbps but...
- Actual download speeds can be 2Mb only
- When paying $$$$ for Internet, check the DOWNLOAD speeds
- Compare the DOWNLOAD speeds
- Expect slower upload/download speeds in cities vs suburban area
- No, as speeds you can buy are determined by providers
- Providers may offer cheap rural broadband at reduced speeds to cut cost
- Can expect BPL at 85Mbps (better than no Internet at all)
- There is BPL at 100Mbps but cost is higher
10) Rule of Thumb. Summary of recommendations:
- Entry-Level - (256K or 512K) doesn't offer the performance you'll need to be able to get the best out of streaming audio and video. Of course, if you only use the Internet to read web pages and send email, a slower connection may be adequate.
- The Best All-Rounder - For the majority of Internet users, a 1Mb deal will offer the best balance between price and performance.
- Heavy or Shared Usage - A faster connection (2Mb or faster) is probably worth considering if you intend to play a lot of games, or if you intend to share the Internet connection between more than two or three computers at home or in the office. A connection at the higher end of the scale (4Mb upward) will allow you to take advantage of newer trends - such as video and music on demand or Digital Broadband Internet TV.

US broadband penetration and speeds
What are the most widely used home Internet connection?
What is a fast, reliable access?
How fast? How slow? What average speeds?
Summary:
1) The minimum speeds in the US FCC National Broadband Plan will be "faster than dial-up." [What is U.S. dial-up speed? <56kbps]
2) A recent survey sponsored by the FCC referred to the term "broadband." The survey described home broadband users as those who have almost any Internet connection other than dial-up, such as a cable modem, DSL, fixed wireless, satellite, fiber optic, T-1 or a mobile broadband wireless connection.
3) Cable and DSL, the most widely used home Internet connections, can theoretically reach speeds of 30Mbit/sec and 10Mbit/sec, respectively, but average speeds are often much slower.[Measure upload & download times.]
4) The U.S. is falling behind other countries in broadband penetration and speeds. [Which countries have better bb penetration compared to U.S.?]
5) The U.S. Federal Communications Commission's (FCC) upcoming national broadband plan will ask television broadcasters to voluntarily give up unused wireless spectrum, in exchange for a share of the profits when that spectrum is sold. [Who are U.S. TV broadcasters? What is wireless spectrum? What profits are expected? Why do TV broadcast and mobile bb use/share wireless spectrum?]
6) The FCC's national broadband plan, due out next month (March 2010), will focus on freeing up 500MHz of wireless spectrum over the next decade, FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski said during a speech at the New America Foundation. As part of that effort, Genachowski said the plan will propose a "mobile future auction," permitting spectrum licensees to give up spectrum.
7) FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski's speech: "With this plan, we have a special opportunity to lay a foundation for American leadership in the 21st century. If we get it right, broadband, and in particular mobile broadband, will be an enduring engine for creating jobs and growing our economy, for spreading knowledge and enhancing civic engagement, for advancing a healthier, sustainable way of life. This is our moment. Let's seize it."

National Archives gets firm on records preservation
KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 17 — The National Archives of Malaysia (ANM) being the keeper of the national records seeks greater cooperation especially from public servants in preserving records that may have legal and historical significance in the future.More from The Malaysian Insider - Feb 17: http://www.themalaysianinsider.com/index.php/malaysia/53435-national-archives-gets-firm-on-records-preservation

I now have a researcher card/pass to do research at our National Archives in KL. I am writing on The Early Malay Doctors from 1870 to Merdeka. There is not much in our archive on this topic. What is more worrying is that most of the archived materials are still hardcopies when what we need for today's research should be in softcopies and readily available at the National Archives portal. There is still much that National Archives needs to do and can do. I will be more than happy to assist with the medical literature as I am currently working on that and should be free once my book is published. Maybe a Sabbatical Leave spent at National Archives will expedite efforts in converting from print base to digital archive. I really need the digital version as I live farthest from KL and can't be going there frequently or daily as I can if everything is online. It will be great once we can have the digital version. Malaysia Boleh!

@National Heritage
TQ for your support. I have an idea...if National Archives is interested, I can help initiate a digital version...but only after my book is out next year. For now, I can gather people who are interested, and then get USM to move in for MoU and I take it from there. There is National Library of Medicine online and also British Museum online, so those two are good enough to study for a start. If it is text that we are after, then I would suggest to study that of PubMed and the big publishers (even Amazon.com has a good hosting mechanism). Whatever it is, we must think of safety, security & accessibility of Malaysia's digital resources. There is a good company that can make very good databases or we can initiate USM to create a good one that is unique. If the rakyat needs the digital resources, then I will e-mail my VC and see how USM can help National Archives.
